VIVA EUROPA

VIVA EUROPA is a cultural initiative integrated within the European Union activities through its respective European Years, with the high patronage of the European Commissioner for each Year. It has become the European Years cultural celebration with the most significant visibility.

This cultural initiative was born in 2009, European Year of Creativity and Innovation, aiming to promote the European feeling of community through a relevant cultural form rooted in European tradition, opera, to be enjoyed live by the whole European audience.

The event is targeted at all citizens resident in Europe and it consists in the simultaneous broadcast of a live opera being represented in the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain, to all the cities that wish to join the project. Attendance to the event is free of charge.


VIVA EUROPA 2011 JUNE 13TH is integrated in the activities of the European Union within the 2011 European Year of Volunteering, becoming its cultural event with the most significant visibility, under the patronage of Ms Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship.

The event consists in the live transmission of Giacomo Puccini’s opera TOSCA, for showing on large screens in public places. The performance will be broadcast live from the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain, to all the cities wishing to join the project on 13th June 2011 at 20:00 hrs (GMT+2).

A cast of the highest artistic standards, led by Oksana Dyka, Jorge de León and Bryn Terfel, participate in this production, together with the magnificent Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana, all conducted by maestro Zubin Mehta.

TOSCA is considered one of the most representative operas of the Italian verismo repertoire, for its dramatic intensity and for counting on some of the most beautiful operatic arias. The plot combines intrigue, violence and passion.
